As most of our fans will remember, we (De Fuckups) were lucky enough to win the award for “Most Energetic and Hardest Working Artist” category at the ‘Drentse Muziekprijzen show’ in 2004. What most of those fans don’t know however, is that the prize came with a fairly sizeable amount of money: 20.000 euros. When the money was transferred to our account we argued a bit as to what would be the best way to invest this money, but after a while we kind of lost track and just let the money sit in and grow fat in our bank account. We don’t really care about money anyway.
We took another look at our account in 2024 to make sure we weren’t broke and saw that simply by just not touching it for twenty years, our award money had grown to a whopping 97,540 euros! That is serious money, and for a hard working band that means it’s time to invest!
But it all was very new for us. We’ve always paid ourselves for recordings and albums, and all our recordings have always been rights free because we release them with a creative commons license to piss the record industry off. And we even have two specialized bookkeepers for artists in our ranks, as well as two professors at art schools, two graphic designers, some sign painters and a typographic nerd so we never ever really needed any help with our artistic endeavors.
But then our guitarist Tup introduced us to this amazing dutch artist River Roest whom he got to know through his daughter Zoë. He made amazing animations, and after a while, that’s when De Fuckups decided to spend our 98,677 euros (by that time) on him to making an animation for our song “Lie To Me”. And yes, of course: we got a bargain. because a custom made animated clip usually costs way more than that. (if you want real prices for animations, ask Deep Purple what they paid for the brick in the wall clip, or ask radiohead what they paid for Paranoid Android) but we like to think that it is because even 20 years later, we’re still the most energetic and hard working band around, and our fans love to give us a discount.
